Barito Putera was formed with the hope of advancing South Kalimantan football. Born from the initiative of H. Abdussamad Sulaiman HB.
The team's initial framework came from Persinus Banjarmasin, an amateur club from South Kalimantan which was also founded by Abdussamad in 1975, and from the 1988 South Kalimantan PON preparation team, such as Radiani, Tarmizi (Barabai), Masransyah (Rantau), Abdillah, Sultan (Martapura ), two brothers M. Yusuf and M. Riduan, Sir Yusuf Huwae, Enong Noordiansyah, and Marjono (Banjarmasin). M. Yusuf was appointed as the first captain of Barito.
Wanting to excel in the Galatama Competition, Barito Putera brought in national players such as Agus Salim, Muchtar and Abunawas from Ujung Pandang, then from West Java brought in M. Yunus, Nadir Salasa from Surabaya, Sugiarto from Malang and Priyo Haryadi from Jakarta. The beginning of its establishment directly followed Galatama, with manager M Hatta and coach Andi Lala.
In the 1988 Galatama Competition, Barito was only able to sit in 18th place. Barito could not compete with big teams who had matured before, such as Kramayudha Tiga Berlian, Pelita Jaya, Makassar Utama, Niac Mitra and Arema Malang.
