Arema Football Club (or known as Arema FC) is a reliable Indonesian football club originating from Malang Regency, East Java. Arema competes in Liga 1 which is the highest caste of Indonesian football. Arema is also known by the term "Singo Crazy" (in Javanese which means "Lion Crazy").

Arema was founded on August 11, 1987 as Arema Malang. In 2009, Arema changed its name to Arema Indonesia. In 2012, Arema Indonesia was acquired by the Bakrie Team. At that time, Bakrie sold their club, Pelita Jaya and changed to Pelita Bandung Raya, thereby canceling the planned merger between the two teams. In 2013, Arema Indonesia changed its name to Arema Cronus after being acquired by the Bakrie Team. In 2017, the name Arema Cronus changed to Arema FC until now.

While competing in League 1, Arema was based at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency and Gajayana Stadium, Malang City. Arema is a city-wide team from Arema Indonesia, Persema Malang, Persekam Metro, NZR Sumbersari, and Malang United.

Arema Football Club (Arema Football Association, its official name) was born on August 11, 1987, with the passion to develop football in Malang. At that time, another team from Malang, Persema Malang, was like a magnet for Arek Malang. Gajayana Stadium – the government club's home base – is always packed with spectators. Where was Arema's position at that time? What is certain, the club has not manifested itself as a football community. He is still a "utopia".

Acub Zaenal, former governor of Irian Jaya 3rd and former PSSI administrator in the 80s, who initially contributed to the thought of forming the Galatama club in Malang city after first building the Perkesa 78 club with Dirk "Derek" Sutrisno (Alm), the founder of the club Fleet '86.

Thanks to the good relationship between Dirk and sports journalists in Malang, especially football, SIWO PWI Malang suggested holding a seminar to see "Is it time for Malang City to have a Galatama club?" The inspiration was approved. It was from there that SIWO, which at that time was managed by Drs. Heruyogi (Leader) and Drs. Bambang Bes (Secretary of SIWO) held a seminar at the Street Journalists' Center. Raya Langsep Malang City. The theme is "Club Galatama and the City of Malang". The resource persons brought in included; Acub Zainal's father (Galatama Administrator), Leader of East Java PSSI Pengda, Malang City PSSI Commander, and Doctor. Ubud Salim, M.A. The activity was opened by the Mayor of Malang Tom Uripan (Alm). The results of the seminar recommended that: Malang City is deemed worthy of having a professional Galatama club.

It must be admitted, the early establishment of Arema cannot be separated from the great position of Mr. Derek, who voted for the local club Armada 86. So that the name of this club was originally Aremada, which is a combination of Armada and Arema. On the other hand, Arema is the name of the community of Malang people. But a few months after that, Aremada's name was changed to Arema 86. Unfortunately, Mr. Derek's efforts to maintain the Galatama Arema'86 club faced many obstacles, especially as the team that was expected to take part in the Galatama VIII arena began to be squeezed by financial difficulties.

From here, Acub Zaenal took over and tried to save Arema'86 to always survive. After being taken over, the name Arema'86 was finally changed to PS. Arema Malang was also inaugurated as the Galatama participant club. PS. Arema Malang was established on August 11, 1987 according to the deed of notary Pramu Haryono SH Number 58. The establishment coincided with August 11, 1987, a kind of water just flowing, not based on a special determination (option).

Because it was established in August like that after that the symbol Singo (lion) appeared. That is, the month of August matches the identical horoscope with the Zodiac Leo or Singo.

Sejarah tentang Arema pada masa Kerajaan

Nama Arema merupakan legenda Malang. Merupakan Kidung Harsawijaya yang awal kali mencatat nama tersebut, ialah cerita tentang Patih Kebo Arema di kala Singosari diperintah Raja Kertanegara. Prestasi Kebo Arema gilang gemilang. Dia mematahkan pemberontakan Kelana Bhayangkara semacam ditulis dalam Kidung Panji Wijayakrama sampai segala pemberontak sirna semacam daun dimakan ulat. Demikian pula pemberontakan Cayaraja semacam ditulis dalam Kitab Negarakertagama. Kebo Arema pula yang jadi penyangga politik ekspansif Kertanegara. Bersama Mahisa Anengah, Kebo Arema menaklukkan Kerajaan Pamalayu yang berpusat di Jambi. Setelah itu dapat memahami Selat Malaka. Sejarah heroik Kebo Arema memanglah tenggelam. Buku- buku sejarah cuma mencatat Kertanegara selaku raja terbanyak Singosari, yang pusat pemerintahannya dekat Kota Malang.
